Shakeology®: A Shake Too Good to Be True?

By Dr. Mark Cheng, MD

This is an article from a professional who teaches for one the most respected kettlebell training communities in the country. It was written by Dr. Mark Cheng in response to some of his students and peers who were questioning his vocal support of Shakeology.

Lately, I've made mention about my use of the nutritional product Shakeology, and some folks have been questioning if I've abandoned the RKC ranks and gone "P90X" on them. So let me set the record straight . . . definitively . . . once and for all.

I heard about Shakeology before there WAS a Shakeology, directly from the mouth of its inventor—Isabelle Brousseau. The wife of Beachbody CEO Carl Daikeler, Ms. Brousseau is a singularly talented coach and highly educated researcher. She's spent years studying the advanced principles of elite human performance from authorities around the world, and I was honored to have the chance to share Pavel Tsatsouline's Hardstyle RKC kettlebell training method privately with her. As an adept student, she was on the fast track to preparing for her RKC instructor certification when she decided to take time off upon learning she was expecting her first child.

During the times I spent training her, Isabelle and I spoke about Chinese herbal medicine, and she mentioned she was researching ways of combining all-natural foods with the highest possible nutrient values into a meal-replacement shake designed for athletes and people-on-the-go. When she mentioned wanting to put in high quality ayurvedic herbs, Chinese herbs, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, prebiotics, and a host of other vitamins and minerals, my initial reaction was, "Yeah, right!"

My doubts were not unfounded. Having spent years studying (and consuming) Chinese herbal medicines, I had a familiarity with a good deal of what Brousseau was talking about. The ingredients she'd mentioned sounded like a wish list that only insiders would know of and only the filthy rich and well-connected could afford. On top of that, the taste of such a mixture, I surmised, would probably make even the least sensitive tasters wretch with disgust. To make a mixture that would contain the type of ingredients she mentioned, be stable enough to ship and store, and not taste like the bottom skim of a Los Angeles sewer was a pipe dream as far as I was concerned. So I filed the conversation away in my mental round file. A couple of years later, when I met with Carl to discuss a project idea, I saw the finished product on his shelf. Eager to see how far from the initial ideal the finished product had to compromise, I was in for a shock.

Not only did Shakeology have EXACTLY the type of ingredients that Isabelle had mentioned during our training sessions, but it had MORE!

Some notables:

* Astragalus: widely used in Chinese medicine as an immune system regulator
* MSM: one of the most popular supplements for joint health
* Chia: the Mayan super-seed with more calcium than whole milk, more omega-3 and -6 than salmon, and more protein than kidney beans
* THREE different proprietary blends and some vitamins and minerals that actually exceeded the U.S. RDA.

This stuff looked like it was fit for a king for sure. So I was curious to put it to the final 2 tests: taste and performance. I wanted to know if it smelled or tasted anything like what I thought it would and was curious if it'd make a difference for my high-velocity, high-output, high-mileage lifestyle.

A little background: I'm a caffeine junkie by virtue of workaholism. Ever since discovering the "joy" of all-nighter homework sessions in high school, I became keenly aware of the value of being able to work harder and sacrifice sleep. So when the NoDoz, Vivarin, and Mountain Dew lifestyle needed an adult turn after I'd graduated and started writing, teaching, treating patients, travelling, training, and trying to spend time with my family, I dove hip deep into energy drinks like Red Bull, Monster, and caffeinated energy bars like Pit Bull. When I speak well about a nutritional product, it's for one reason: it helps me get my work done while keeping me healthy. Another bit of background: I'm a glutton. I love food, especially food that tastes good. I never met a filet mignon that I didn't like, and never met one that I didn't like better wrapped in bacon, with a side of bacon-wrapped scallops, and mashed potatoes—topped with bacon. If it doesn't taste good, I don't care how good it is for me. I'll STILL probably not like it well enough to be disciplined about taking it.

The Greenberry Shakeology bag that Carl gave me turned my ball of preconceived notions and stood it on its ear. From the moment I opened the bag, the scent was wonderful, like a dessert that you're eager to tear into. So I dumped some ice and water into the blender and dropped a scoop of the bright green powder in with it. I didn't add juice or other fruits because I wanted to know exactly how this tasted by itself, unadulterated. The next sound I heard after taking my first sip was, "Yum!" It passed the taste test.

Next was the travel test. I wanted to see how it kept me going while traveling, so instead of my usual chain-drinking habit of Monster or Red Bull, I tried a shake or two during the day, usually with one in the morning. I brought Shakeology with me to New York, New Mexico, and most recently to Australia to see how I'd do with it, and the results were remarkable. I had sustained, stable energy, but without the jitters, aggression, and hard drops afterwards. When I travel, I travel to teach, and I have to be up, energetic, strong, and focused. My days here in LA revolve around teaching, training, treating patients, and trying to steal moments with my family. So if something doesn't give me the energy to do what I need, I can't waste my precious time or hard-earned money with it.

Shakeology has proven itself to be able to give me all of that on multiple occasions, both while traveling and here in Los Angeles. You can draw your own conclusions about any product you want, but I'm sharing my experiences with Shakeology here openly. And if you think I'm endorsing it only for financial gain, you couldn't be more wrong. I signed up as a "Coach" so I could buy the product for myself! If you want to try it, you know where to find it, and get ready to be surprised how little such high-quality nutrition costs!

Shakeology FAQ

Lots of questions are coming in about Shakeology, so here are the main one's answered by Steve Edwards of Beachbody. BTW, it has passed the taste test of my hubby AND my 8-yr old!

Should I continue to take Activit, Peak Health, or other multi-vitamins along with Shakeology?
============================================
While Shakeology contains a lot of vitamins and minerals it's still recommended that you take a multi-vitamin, especially if you're working out. In fact, Shakeology will help increase the bioavailability of your vitamin if taken together. If you skip your vitamin your nutrient bases will still be covered but an active person especially doing a workout like P90X will always be struggling to meet the nutrients requirements placed on the body. Combining Peak Health Formula and Shakeology can keep you charging through even the most intense exercise program.
============================================
I already have some Meal Replacement. Should I throw it out and switch to Shakeology?
============================================
You shouldn't throw it out but Shakeology is a far more thorough formulation. Use your old Meal Replacement at times when you’re active or as a poor man's Recovery Formula. The higher sugar and lower fiber content of Meal Replacement make it better around the time you are exercising.
============================================
Can I take this and Results and Recovery Formula?
============================================
Yes but not together! Recovery Formula should only be taken during or after exercise when you've been exhausting your body's blood sugar. At any other time Shakeology would be your preferred option.
============================================
Should I still take an omega supplement?
===========================================
Yes as there is no EPA/DHA (the two omega fatty acids in fish oil) in Shakeology.
============================================
How about Cal/Mag?
============================================
One serving of Shakeology has 500 milligrams of calcium, meaning that you can cut your dosage of Cal/Mag in half. It's recommended that you take your Cal/Mag with Shakeology as it will help your body absorb its nutrients.
===========================================
There is no food coloring. How is one green and the other brown?
===========================================
The ingredients (herbal powders, grass powders, vegetable powders, and some fruit and berry powders) make color green. The base of chocolate blend is also green, but the chocolate and cocoa powders turn the color "chocolate".
===========================================
Why does the chocolate have more protein?
===========================================
The serving size for chocolate is 8 grams higher than for greenberry. The extra ingredients added for the chocolate blend (mostly chocolate powder and cocoa powder) add an additional 2 grams of protein for the serving size.
===========================================
Does this mean I don't have to eat any more veggies?
===========================================
Not that we recommend it but, yes, you could get away with skipping your veggies if your drink Shakeology daily. Keep in mind that you still need to fill out the rest of your caloric needs and veggies are the best source of both nutrients and fiber you can eat. The healthiest diets will still contain vegetables.
==========================================
What kind of protein is it made with?
==========================================
The primary source of protein is from whey, which comes from milk. Whey is one of the most bioavailable protein sources. Translation: it speeds to its work of repairing your muscles and its amino acids are readily used by your body.
=========================================
Is it a good source of fiber?
=========================================
At 3 grams per 140 calories Shakeology is a balanced source of fiber. More importantly, its fiber sources are varied, coming from apple pectin, flax, chia meal, and yacon. The latter also happens to be one of the best prebiotic sources known to man.
========================================
Can I drink this right before a workout?
========================================
Shakeology would be much better than a meal prior to working out. If it's immediately before, however, you’d be better served by something with more sugar and less fiber for rapid absorption, such as Recovery Formula or Meal Replacement.
========================================
Can I drink this right after a workout?
========================================
Again, it's better than many other options available but less perfect than something designed primarily for this purpose, such as Recovery Formula.
========================================
Does it contain caffeine?
========================================
Shakeology contains no caffeine. It does contain green tea extract but the caffeine has been removed.
========================================
Is it vegetarian?
========================================
The only non-vegetarian ingredient is whey protein, which comes from milk.
========================================
I am a diabetic. How will it affect me?
========================================
We aren't your doctor so we can't give you an official word on this but we're working on trying to get Shakeology approved by the American Diabetes Association.
=========================================
Can I give it to my kids?
========================================
Once again, we're in a legal realm, which we're working on. But considering that kids are approved to eat Ding Dongs and Cocoa Puffs and whatever other godforsaken junk we're pretty certain that it will clear the regulatory radar.
=======================================
What about pregnant and nursing mothers?
=======================================
And, again, we may run into legal stumbles but c'mon, this stuff is nothing but healthy natural foods.
=======================================
Can I mix this in with food I'm cooking/baking?
========================================
While possible, cooking would upset the nutrient balance of Shakeology's ingredients and it's highly recommended that you drink it at room temperature or cooler.
========================================
Will it mix OK in my shaker cup?
========================================
Shakeology mixes at least as well as most meal replacement shakes and can be hand mixed easily. For a drive-in style creamy shake, however, a blender is preferred.
========================================
Do you have any recipes for Shakeology?
========================================
We sure do! The web site at www.shakeology.com has several listed.

Real Deal?

I am asked all the time if Beachbody and P90X are the real deal. Of course, I KNOW from experience that YES, they scream "real deal" through and through. However, I LOVE Beachbody and what it has done for me, so perhaps I'm biased.

How about a neutral source who tried P90X AND other infomercial fitness products? This is exactly what happened on Good Morning America. Click HERE to read the results and to see the video.

Is a plug JUST a plug?

Ha! Nothing like bad hair plugs to get you to read a post!!!!! There is NOTHING bad about this plug, however. Please read on.

One of the reasons that I became involved in Beachbody is because of the support they provide to non-profit organizations (NFP.) Beachbody believes in giving back to our communities. We all know NFPs ie schools, churchs, soroities, fraternites, family organizations. How many of us have been approached to buy cards, candy bars, and cookies or have our car washed? Fundraising with Beachbody is a UNIQUE way to raise money, fight obesity, and promote family time!

The cool part? Beachbody waives ALL fees for NFPs!!!!!!!!

Please go to our new website for more information about this HIP new way to fundraise!

Product Partners (Beachbody) Sues Costco Over Counterfeit P90X

LOS ANGELES – Product Partners LLC, creators of the uber-successful Beachbody line of DRTV fitness products, filed a lawsuit against Costco Wholesale Corp., on Tuesday for copyright infringement on its trademarked materials “P90X,” “P90X & Design,” “Beachbody” and “Beachbody & Design.”

P90X is a popular home exercise kit consisting of 13 DVDs and a 90-day workout routine, sold exclusively through Beachbody.com and authorized Beachbody Coaches. The Beachbody trademark, as well as P90X & Design and Beachbody & Design, is used in connection with dietary supplements, meal replacements, diet aids and video cassettes for fitness and dietary instruction.

The filing, in the Western Division of the Central District of California court, against the massive wholesale retailer, along with National Clothing Company Inc. and DOES 1-10, states: “Upon information and belief, at least as early as July 8, 2009, Costco sold counterfeit P90X DVDs,” and “displayed copyrighted promotional video for P90X” in stores in Pennsylvania, Washington and California, without authorization or licensing from the plaintiff.

Costco did not respond to attempts by Response to reach the company for comment.

When the maker of the hit fitness program recently learned of the sale of the products in Costco’s stores, it immediately looked into taking legal action, knowing the product line is sold strictly in direct response channels and could, in no way, be authorized by Product Partners. In fact, counsel for the company warns buyers that any P90X product sold by a retailer, either brick-and-mortar or online, is not a legal copy and may be defective.

“As with every other DR company that creates great products, we vigorously have to protect our intellectual property and the integrity of our products, says Jonathan Gelfand, legal counsel for Product Partners. “It’s too easy to find counterfeit copies out there and it’s deceiving the public.”

Gelfand went on to say that the counterfeiting and the copying of DVDs is a problem that Product Partners is constantly looking out for and addressing. The company gets calls every day from customers who bought what they thought was a genuine P90X for a lower price and then they wind up with a defective DVD, missing a manual, or the disc corrupts a computer. “We will do everything to protect consumers and the integrity of consumers,” Gelfand says.
