Iced Coffees Can Pack As Many Calories As a Meal

Monday, July 27, 2009
Reuters

Enjoying an iced coffee? Better skip dinner or hit the gym afterwards, with a cancer charity warning that some iced coffees contain as many calories as a hot dinner.

The World Cancer Research Fund conducted a survey of iced coffees sold by some popular chains in Britain including Starbucks, Caffe Nero and Costa Coffee to gauge the calories as studies increasingly link obesity with cancer.

The worst offender — a venti dark berry mocha frappuccino from Starbucks — had 561 calories. Other iced coffee contained more than 450 calories and the majority had in excess of 200.

Health experts advise that the average woman should consume about 2,000 calories a day and a man about 2,500 calories to maintain a healthy weight. Dieters aim for 1,000 to 1,500 calories a day.

"The fact that there is an iced coffee on the market with over a quarter of a woman's daily calories allowance is alarming," Dr Rachel Thompson, science program manager at London-based WCRF, said in a widely-reported statement.

"This is the amount of calories you might expect to have in an evening meal, not in a drink."

The WCRF has estimated that 19,000 cancers a year in Britain could be prevented if people lost their excess weight with growing evidence that excess body fat increases the risk of various cancers.

Thompson said having an iced coffee as an occasional treat was fine but it was best to opt for an unsweetened coffee with skimmed or semi skimmed milk — and steer clear of the cream or sugary fruit syrups.

"If you are having them regularly then they will increase the chances of you becoming overweight, which in turn increases your risk of developing cancer, as well as other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes," she added.

The WCRF, which identified the drinks' calories, did note that healthier versions of iced coffees were available at all the stores.

Starbucks in 2007 changed its default milk used in beverages like lattes to 2 percent from whole milk and is this year testing a frappuccino formula that mirrors its bid to cut calories in its food items to offer healthier choices.

Costa Coffee on its website gives full details of the contents of its drinks and food items, stressing that drinks can be made as asked with skimmed, full fat or soya milk.

Caffe Nero also publishes the calorie contents of all its drinks and food on its website.

It's YOU

This is reposted from Tony Horton's Blog. Very on-point. STOP the excuses!

It's not your mother or your father. Not your sister or your brother. It's not your God or your Government. It's not the high school bully or your eighth grade home room teacher. It's not your therapist or your wife or your boyfriend. It's not luck or even circumstance. It's not your height, weight or age that makes life great, or not. It's You! It's you that makes you happy or sad. It's you that makes you smart or stupid. It's you that eats right or not. It's you that chooses to exercise or to sit on your ass. It's you who puts the cigarette in your mouth. It's you that yells at your 3 year old daughter. It's you that doesn't have patience when you need it. Your parents created you, but it's you that decides to make something of yourself. Point the finger in the mirror because that image before you is the only creature on earth that can guarantee happiness, fitness, health, love, joy, purpose and a state of well being. Hoping and wishing that everyone and everything else is going to bring you a better life is a farce and a fantasy.

When you learn how to rely on yourself, you discover that it's not really about you anyway. When you finally stop relying on others for your happiness and blaming them when it doesn't happen you'll see life for what it really is. A community where we help each other. The transition from "me and my problems" to "how can I help." is easier for some than others, but it needs to happen if you want a full and happy life. You have to get your act together because important people in your life need you. They need you to be thoughtful and trustworthy. They want you to listen and NOT give advice unless they ask. They hope you'll be patient, caring and understanding. If you pull this off you'll also learn than perfect strangers are willing to listen to you, because you'll have something they want. You'll have the formula for a good life. A happy life. A healthy life. You will no longer need to rely on others for your happiness because your happiness will come from helping others.

Calcium...what it's cracked up to be

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our body. Did you know that 99% of calcium is found in our bones?!?!?! While we all know that calcium is important for a child's growth, a calcium deficit in adults can lead to osteoporosis, a bone crippling ailment.

In addition to our bone health, calcium is essential for muscle contraction...including our heart! It is also needed to maintain a normal blood pressure and transmission of nerve impulses.

It is such an important component to healthy living, yet many, MANY adults do not get enough calcium in their daily diet. The average adult between ages 19-50 needs 1,000 mg/day. This is equivalent to 3 glasses of milk. We are told to actually ingest more than the daily requirement because diets higher in protein, as is the American diet, cause an increase in calcium excretion.

Calcium can be found in milk products, in green leafy veggies, and shellfish. Lots of food products available today are fortified with calcium. Milk has the most calcium per serving.

If you are unsure of how much calcium to take, particularly you women out there, PLEASE talk to your physician. Stop osteoporosis before it starts.

You Do The Sharing, Beachbody Does The Rest

Reprint from Carl's Blog (Beachbody CEO)~

An acquaintance asked me what she would have to do to be a Beachbody coach:

I said "Play, shake, and share."

She said; "Right, but what about running the business and all that stuff?"

I said: "For the price of a coach kit, here's what happens: We build a
website for you, we take orders you get on your website and handle the
inventory, billing, shipping, and customer service."

She said: "So what do I do?"

I said: "Play, shake and share... Use a fitness program that suits you,
and replace at least one meal a day with a meal replacement shake. The
results will be visible very fast and you can still eat the rest of
your meals with real food, with the rest of the family. Share means to
tell some people what you are doing every day via email, message
boards, blogs, in the line at the grocery store. People you talk to
will start see you're serious. They will see you drinking your shake.
You tell them how easy it is to stay motivated because you're going
deep on this one. And they will soon understand that the motivation to
turn your weight loss into a profit is HELPING YOU STAY CONSISTENT."

She said: "How will that turn into income for me?"

I said: "We spend over $1 million a week advertising these products.
Other network marketing companies don't do that. That means people you
"share" with likely know about Turbo Jam, P90X, Ten Minute Trainer,
etc. Tell them when they're ready to lose the weight they should buy
them through you and join the club, and they will save 10% off the TV
price. And to conquer the food problem, replace a meal a day with a
substantial meal replacement shake. They might not buy today, but
eventually they will see a product from Beachbody that sparks their
interest, and they'll remember you were the one who made it sound easy.
They'll want to buy from you and get the best price."

She said: "But how do I recruit other coaches?"

I said: "You've told my how frustrated you are that you can never stay
with a program. When I asked you if having a money motivation attached
to getting fit and eating right would help you stay with it, you said
it would. We didn't talk about you getting rich, or buying a new car.
We talked about how the slightest hint of an extra income would be that
extra ingredient to help you exercise and eat better. And you told me
you know a couple other people who could use an extra income and to
lose twenty or so pounds. That is the start of an organization, and the
path to also getting a couple customers from Beachbody."

She said: "You do the advertising. You set up the website. I don't have to
buy a bunch of product to sell. And I don't have to ship it and bill
people. I just follow your program to exercise, eat better, and talk to
people about it. How can I be sure it will work?"

I said: "There's only one way this will work: If you do it. If you finally get
consistent with Play, Shake and Share it will absolutely work. Our
walls are lined with pictures of proof. But you have to want it
seriously. This can't be another light foray into a lame "diet of the
day". Once and for all, you have to want to do what works. Do you think
you really want it?"

She said: "I so want to feel better about my body. And I need to find a way out of this debt."

I said: "What's the one thing standing in your way?"

She said: "Me?"

I said: "You can think about it. You can think about it some more. Or you
can commit. The solution for your health and your income is right here.
You pick the program, get the shake, and start to share it."

She said: "I do the sharing, Beachbody does the rest?"

I said: "Let's get started"

Do You See What I See?

I bought a new gadget: The Bodybugg.

Before last week, I had never heard of it. Then multiple people, mainly Chalene Johnson creator of ChaLEAN Extreme and Turbo Jam, started to endorse it. Hmmmmmm...thought I should look into it.

Only took me a day to make the decision to purchase it.

I'm a very black & white, visual person. It's simply the way my mind works. This contraption is RIGHT up my alley. It's completely in your face.

Basically it, very scientifically, tells you how many calories you burn per day...within 90% accuracy. The concept is simple: take in less calories than you burn and you'll lose weight. Take in more calories and you'll gain.

During times of high stress, I tend to play ostrich and not pay attention to what is going on with my body...if I stress eat. The Bodybugg helps prevent that because I will flat out know what I've burned. I won't be able to wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and say "What happened?"

It's very comfortable to wear...left upper arm. I personally don't sleep with it on, but you can. You then upload all the data into the Bodybugg website for analysis. It rocks!

Gone are the days of estimating what I "think" I've done. In fact, I wore it yesterday during Plyo X and burned LESS calories than I've been assuming I burned in the past. Ummmm...wow.

The program will tell you, based on your stats and goals, how many calories you need to burn a day. You then get your booty moving to make it to that goal by the end of the day. Remember, it does track ALL your calories expended, even at rest.

If you tend to be like me, I would strongly recommend The Bodybugg!

Your Brain on Exercise

By Tony Horton

There was an astonishing article in Newsweek a few weeks back that just blew my mind/brain/cranium/noggin. Here's what I've learned from this article and further research.

We all know that working out and exercising do amazing things for our body, and the benefits, other than weight loss and getting fit, are endless. Most of us also know that when our hearts, legs, and lungs get pumping, we feel much better than if we did nothing. Turns out that doing 20 minutes or more of cardiovascular and/or high-paced resistance workouts affects every aspect of our lives.

The great thing about the Newsweek article is that it really laid out the scientific findings over the last few years. Here's the scope. When you're forced to pull more oxygen into the body through exercise, you break what's called "the blood-brain barrier." It happens when you climb a long flight of stairs and when you're busting through any kind of workout that gets your heart rate pumping. This oxygen-filled blood makes its way into the temporal lobe of the brain. Inside that temporal lobe is an area called the hippocampus. Inside the hippocampus lies the seahorse-shaped area known as the dentate gyrus. As you exercise, these oxygen-filled blood cells rush into this area of the brain. A chemical/protein called IGF-1 is formed and released inside the dentate gyrus, which ramps up another chemical/molecule called BDNF; both IGF-1 and BDNF are "Miracle-grow" for the brain.

Studies with kids right up to seniors have proven that high-paced workouts (Power 90®, Power Half Hour®, Power 90® Master Series, P90X®, Tony & the Kids!, etc.) cause the release of these chemicals into the brain. Combine this with even more "brain drugs" like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine and you've got yourself a feel-good party in your head.

Aerobic physical movement causes the release of these chemicals, and they all help you focus and give you energy when you need it. They also help you relax and rest properly. It's like a homemade chemistry set inside your skull that produces a cocktail that simulates the effects of Prozac and Ritalin.

Children who play outdoors more often score better on tests than kids who don't. Regular physical activity improves memory, mood, and problem-solving abilities. Consistent exercise raises self-esteem and decreases anxiety. Study after study has proven that people who exercise 5 to 6 days a week greatly decrease their need for psychotherapeutic drugs.

If your brain goes without regular bouts of exercise, the hippocampus will shrink and erode, which can lead to neurological illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease. When the dentate gyrus is stimulated, neuro-genesis or neuro-plasticity occurs. I'm not talking about just slowing the aging process, I'm telling you that the brain creates new cells through exercise—brand new cells that assist in the reversal of aging. If you're looking for the fountain of youth, you can find it inside your head every time you exercise for more than 20 minutes. TMT X 2 anyone?

WHOA...Our Nation is FAT!

Guess that sounds rather "in your face," but people, WAKE UP!!!!!!!! How can we continue to play "ostrich" and keep our heads in the sand? Funny thing is that ostrich meat is actually LOW in fat.

A new report finds that our obesity rate in the United States rose in 23 states over the past year and did not decline in 1 state!!!!!!! Mississippi ranks as the fattest state, with Alabama a close second. In fact, in Mississippi, 44% of CHILDREN are obese!!!!! Parents, what are you teaching your children? They are being set up for failure.

Why is there such a disconnect?

I don't have an answer for that, but I do have a solution. Calories out MUST be greater than calories in. Period. Not sure what that means or how to accomplish it? Contact me. I'd love to show you.
